Originally an engineering graduate from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), John decided it’s time for a career change a few years after graduation and started the PGDL and LLB programmes in The University of Law in 2020/21 – which he did extremely well and graduated with Distinction and First Class Honours! John later successfully completed the PCLL in University of Hong Kong and is now a practicing Hong Kong barrister.

Converting into Law with a non-Law undergraduate degree is a pretty common way to become a lawyer in the UK, where over 40% of newly-recruited lawyers are in fact Non-Law graduates in recent years! While it’s not as common a practice in Hong Kong yet, many Hong Kong lawyers also started their legal studies after having done their first degree – these include solicitor Iu Ting-kwok (former member of the Steering Committee on Mediation at the Department of Justice), who is also a GDL graduate of The University of Law!

In this very special sharing session, The University of Law has invited John Li – a PGDL and LLB graduate and now a practicing Hong Kong barrister – to share his invaluable experience in his journey, in the hope that John’s experience can inspire students to make the first step in their career change!
