The Making of UK University Rankings

The Good University Guide published by the Times takes into account of a wide range of criteria (such as student satisfaction, research quality, entry standard, graduate prospects, etc) to evaluate the quality of education in an university. The Guide’s more holistic approach is believed to be able to reflect standards in both teaching and learning, as well as academic researches, which is why we have always recommended the Good University Guide as the quantitative reference when students and parents choose the right university

The Good University Guide is created with secondary school leavers as their target readers. Therefore, in its methodology it also focuses on undergraduate programmes. This year we have produced a simplified version of the methodology behind the university rankings, in order to help students and parents better understand its values:

Ranking Criteria Weighting
Student Satisfaction
Data of the Student Satisfaction score comes from the National Student Survey (NSS), where final-year students are asked to provide feedback on their course before they graduate. The NSS focuses on two main areas of teaching quality and learning experience:

Teaching Quality (representing 67% of the Student Satisfaction score) covers a number of teaching-related ratings from the NSS:

  • Teaching: Did students find their teachers good at explaining things? Did their teachers make the subject interesting?
  • Learning Opportunities: Did the course provide adequate opportunities for students to explore ideas or concepts in depth? Did students have the opportunities to apply what they have learned?
  • Assessment & Feedback: Were marking criteria made clear to students in advance? Did students receive helpful comments on their work?
  • Academic Support: Were students able to contact the teaching staff when they needed support? Did they receive good advice and guidance in relation to the course?

Student Experience (representing 33% of the Student Satisfaction score) focuses on ratings on course organizations:

  • Organization & Management: Was the course well organized and run smoothly? Did the timetable works efficiently for students?
  • Learning Resources: Did IT resources and facilities efficiently support student’s learning? Did the library provide adequate learning resource?
  • Learning Community: Did students feel that they’re part of a community of staff and students? Were students provided with the right opportunities to work with other students?
  • Student Voice: Were students provided the opportunities to provide feedback on their course? Did the students’ union effectively represent students’ academic interests?

Research Quality
The overall quality ratings from the Research Excellence Framework (REF) conducted in 2014 is used to evaluate standard of academic research of an institution. The REF is a national appraisal exercise carried out by UK higher education funding bodies of UK Government, which is conducted about every few years. Result of the next REF will be announced in 2021.
17%
Entry Standard
Mean tariff point scores on entry for first-year, first-degree students based on major public examinations in the UK, such as A-levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), as well as the Scottish public examinations Scottish Highers & Advanced Highers. The higher the mean tariff point score, the higher the entry standard score in the rankings, which reflects a generally better ability profile of students.
11%
Graduate Prospects
Percentage of graduates who entered full-time professional employment within six months after graduation. The calculation includes UK-domiciled students only.
11%
First/2:1
Percentage of students who graduated with a first or upper second-class degree
11%
Completion Rate
Percentage of students projected to complete their degree, based on the HESA Performance Indicator
11%
Student-Staff Ratio
Total number of full-time students divided by the number of full-time teaching staff (where research-only staff is excluded from the formula)
11%
Services/Facilities Spend
A two-year average of expenditure on academic services and facilities for staff and students, divided by the total number of full-time students

The Importance of Subject Ranking

When looking at the university ranking table, students should be aware that it is based on overall performance of the universities, and therefore may not necessarily reflects a university’s strength in a specific subject area. For many reasons, some universities that are leading in a specific subject area might be ranked relatively low in the overall ranking table. This phenomenon is more common in newly developed subjects (such as hospitality & tourism). For students who have chosen a specific subject, subject ranking tables will be a better reference.
