In the Seminar, Dr Smiths (Lecturer from University of Bristol Law School) will introduce the Law degrees in University of Bristol, covering areas such as course structure & content, entry requirement, placement & student exchange opportunities, exams & other assessments, graduate prospects and more!

• How do you become a Lawyer in the UK? The existing regulations and future changes: Under existing regulations, students who would like to become a lawyer in the UK are required to complete a professional training course at postgraduate level – the Legal Practice Course (LPC) if you’d like to become a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) if you’d like to become a barrister. After that, trainee lawyers will go on to complete a training contract (or pupillage for barristers) in a law firm, before they can fully qualify as a practising lawyer. In this section, Dr Smiths will explain the existing regulations in the UK and the future changes proposed by the authorities, to help students and parents make plans for future studies – if you’re planning start your studies in 2019/20, there are little changes that affect you!
• Specialisms in law: In addition to the division of solicitors and barristers, there are also a range of specialisms (ie. commercial law, human rights law, intellectual properties, etc) and students will have the opportunities to study some of these specialisms via elective modules in their law degrees. Is it a good idea to learn a bit of everything? Or is it better to focus on a smaller selection of specialisms? How will your choices at undergraduate level affect your career and future studies?
• Entry requirements and preparation for LNAT – the Law National Aptitude Test: Top law schools in the UK all require applicants to take the LNAT. What is tested in the LNAT? What format does the LNAT take? How does the test inform the universities during the selection process? How can you prepare for the test?
• Study exchange with HKU Law School: If you study the 4-Year LLB (Hons) Law with Study Abroad in University of Bristol, you will have the opportunities to study in HKU Law School in the third year of your degree. With the right modules completed during your time in HKU, you may qualify for additional subject exemptions in the PCLL Conversion Exams and enhance your chance to come back to Hong Kong for professional training!
• Programme introduction: At the end of the Seminar, Dr Smiths will briefly introduce the law programmes available in University of Bristol, covering areas such as course structure & content, entry requirement, placement & student exchange opportunities, exams & other assessments, graduate prospects and more.
