SOAS, University of London is a specialist constituent college of University of London, which enjoys a unique reputation in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. SOAS is home to the SOAS China Institute (SCI), which is itself the largest community of Chinese Studies scholars in Europe, and headed by Hong Kong scholar Steve Tsang. In the past, SOAS was also where British diplomats and colonial officers (including quite a few governors of Hong Kong) studied local issues and languages before stationing overseas. Today SOAS continues that role providing research reports and pre-departure briefings for diplomats from the UK and other countries. Fit for its focus of studies, SOAS offers languages courses in a wide range of languages, including Cantonese, Persian, Tibetan and many more! Development Studies, Anthropology, Politics & International Relations are ranked the 2nd, the 10th and the 15th in the world respectively (QS 2022), while its the School of Law enjoys a fine reputation in the UK. Notable alumni include many diplomats and well-known figures in politics, such as the King of Malaysia, the Turkish Prime Minister, and former governors of Hong Kong Edward Youde and David Wilson.
