A Newcastle University Seminar on Psychology and Biomedical Sciences

At Newcastle University, Psychology and Biomedical Sciences are both under the Faculty of Medical Sciences. In this Seminar, two professors from the School of Psychology and the School of Biomedical Sciences will demostrate the academic focuses of these two disciplines by sharing the topic of “Communication”. They will also cover other aspects of the subjects, such as course structure, course content, placement opportunities, professional qualifications and more.

• Talking Cells: Intra-Cellular Signalling in Health and Disease.

  Communication happens between cells every second. Cells talk to each other, so that the human body can function. But what if this level of communication fails to perform some of its functions? And how does Biomedical Science solve these problems?

  This part of the seminar will be delivered by Dr. Nick Morris, Senior Lecturer and Director of International Undergraduate Studies.

• Can Psychologists Read Minds?

  Communication between people includes much more than the actual words spoken. That’s why we understand meanings left unsaid – as if we can really read the mind. Can Psychologists really read minds, by studying these non-verbal signals? How does Psychology help patients of Autism, who have difficulties understand non-verbal signals?

  This part of the seminar will be delivered by Dr. Patrick Rosenkranz, Lecturer and BSc Psychology Degree Programme Director.

Course Features: Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical Science explores the functioning of the human body in health and disease. The interdisciplinary approach of the degree exposes students to diverse areas in biological sciences, which include Physiology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Neuroscience, etc.

With the possibility to transfer to Medicine or Dentistry after their first year of study, Biomedical Sciences in Newcastle University is often considered a very good fallback option in UCAS applications of applicants to medical schools.

Course Features: Psychology

Newcastle University is ranked the 11^th in Psychology among other universities in the UK and is one of the very few that’s under a Faculty of Medical Sciences. Its BSc Psychology prorgamme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), qualifying graduates for further professional studies in the discipline of Psychology. Students with more diverse interests can opt for a joint-honours degree, in which they can study subject modules in Nutrition, Biology or Mathematics alongside those in Psychology.
