A Newcastle University Admissions Talk on Architecture & Urban Planning

When picking a university, students are in fact also choosing a place where they would spend a good three to four years living in. If done right, students would enjoy advantages that benefits their learning, provides better placement and employment opportunities and so on. Thanks to its ubiquitously known football club, Newcastle would certainly sound familiar to a lot of Hongkongers. But very rarely have we paid attention to Newcastle’s past and urban development. That’s why in this occasion, Newcastle University would like to demonstrate how the unique urban development history of Newcastle can actually benefit students studying architecture and urban planning!

Back to the Middle Ages, Newcastle was already the northern fortress of England. In modern times, Newcastle was a key industrial city in the North of England because of its manufacturing and shipping industries. In the post-industrial era, Newcastle struggled but eventually reinvented itself through a series of economic restructuring and urban regeneration, and became the energetic cosmopolitan as it’s now famously known to the world.

With such a long and interesting history, Newcastle the city is endorsed with a unique cityscape with rich architectural legacy. Living in Newcastle, not only would you find various architectural styles in the city, you’d also learn how urban planning policies have adapted to changes of economic and social structure. Newcastle has tackled land and housing crises, driven by social changes and the rise of smaller family units. It has redeveloped its waterfront area – What was once occupied by cargo ships and factories, is now one of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks and a checkpoint for tourists and locals. These are all good case studies and reference for architecture and urban planning students! And a lot of them in fact are very much relatable and relevant to issues clouding Hong Kong now and in the foreseeable future.

Content of the Admissions Talk

The Admissions Talk will be delivered by Ms Kelly Weightman, Student Recruitment & Wellbeing Manager from the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University. Joined the University eight years ago and a resident of Newcastle herself, Kelly will offer an insider’s perspective and demonstrate how Newcastle can be an excellent place for an education in architecture and urban planning. In addition to the urban development history mentioned above, Kelly will also introduce Newcastle’s landscape, beaches, football clubs, leisure activities and more, to give you an idea of how it is like living in Newcastle.
