Seminar: Journalism, Sociology & Criminology in Manchester Metropolitan University

Content of Seminar

In the Seminar, four academics from Manchester Metropolitan University will explain the advantages of studying Journalism & Communication, Sociology, Criminology and other social science subjects:

• Why study Journalism, Sociology and Criminology?
• FAQ: What’s Sociology? And what is the difference between Sociology and Social Science? As there are so many of them, at times students can find it difficult to distinguish between different Social Science subjects. The academics will try to introduce a number of social science subjects and highlight their academic focuses, in order to help students make a right choice!
• What Practical Skills will Students Learn in Journalism, Sociology and Criminology? Apart from theories, Journalism, Sociology, Criminology and other social science programmes teach a lot of practical skills from media production to research, interview, analytical skills and many more, which are often much more practical than many think they are! Using their own programmes as examples, the academics will explain what these skills are and how they can be applied to different industries and therefore enhance student’s graduate prospect.
• Graduate Prospect: What do Journalism, Sociology, Criminology and other social science students do after graduation? Many things! Unlike professional degrees where there are well-defined career paths, Journalism, Sociology, Criminology and other social science students usually embark on unique career journeys, with some moving from one industry to another. The academics will share where their students usually go to work after graduation.

The Faculty and the Speakers

Journalism, Sociology and Criminology in Manchester Metropolitan University are all under the Faculty of Humanities, Languages & Social Science. Their researches in Sociology is highly rated in the latest research assessment exercise (REF 2014) done by the UK Government. Among many others, 67% of researches in Sociology were rated “World Leading” and “Internationally Excellent”. The Department of Sociology is also among the 15 universities that were awarded funding by the Nuffield Foundation, to set up a Q-Step Centre of Excellence in Undergraduate Quantitative Methods. Journalism & Communication in Manchester Metropolitan University has a strong focus on digital media, which makes sure students with the skills and abilities to excel in the digital age!
