Birkbeck, University of London is a constituent college of University of London, with a history that can be traced back to 200 years ago as the London Mechanics’ Institute. Today it remains the go-to university of further studies for many Londoners! Its long list of notable alumni include the first Labour Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, co-founder of LSE Sidney Webb, Nobel Prize-winning poet, playwright and literary critic T.S. Eliot, as well as British singer Tracey Thorn and many more.
Many of Birkbeck’s students are adult learners in pursuit of further studies, and all teaching is carried out in evenings at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In the past Birkbeck, University of London has mainly delivered part-time courses, but today all courses are available both full-time and part-time. In terms of subject areas, Birkbeck, University of London is particularly known for its teaching and research in Arts Policy & Management, Business & Managament, Journalism, Law, and Politics & International Relations.
