Seminars and Interview Sessions
5:00PM - 6:00PM
Virtual Art Portfolio Seminar (Norwich University of the Arts)
Seminar Content
All students are required to present an art portfolio when they apply for an art & design programme. What makes a good portfolio? What kinds of works should be included and what shouldn’t? How should you present your portfolio? Should you write an explanation or let the work speak for itself?
Desmond Brett
Subject Leader – MA Fine Art & Senior Lecturer BA (Hons) Fine Art, Norwich University of the Arts
In the seminar, Desmond Brett (Subject Leader – MA Fine Art & Senior Lecturer BA (Hons) Fine Art) and Nuala Motel-Casey (International Officer) from Norwich University of the Arts will introduce all the basics of art portfolios, provide examples and share what expectation art schools have in their students.
- The Basics of Art Portfolio: The sketchbook, How many pieces of work should you include? What kind of work can you include?
- Specific portfolio requirement for different art disciplines
- Examples of outstanding Art Portfolios from the past
- The Advantages of Year 0: Norwich University of the Arts is one of the few UK universities that offer the option of Year 0 in art & design, which is an additional year attached to a standard 3-year undergraduate degree (students will be issued a visa that covers the whole 4-year period). Unlike a generic art foundation, in which students would explore different art & design disciplines to discover their interest, in the Year 0 students will focus on modules directly relevant to their art & design specialisms. In this section, the speakers will explain the advantages of these two different approaches to foundation studies, to help students make an informed decision!
Details of Event: How can I Watch the Seminar from Home? Can I Meet with the Admissions Representative for Portfolio Assessment and Interview?
The seminar will also be delivered via Zoom. Students and parents can watch the seminar in our office and meet with our education consultants right after the seminar. Alternatively, you can also choose to watch the seminar in the comfort of your own home. Simply select your preferred “Mode of Attendance” as you complete our online form, we will then make the appropriate arrangements.
After the Seminar, students with their portfolio are welcome to meet with the lecturer for admission interviews and portfolio assessments. It doesn’t matter if students don’t have a complete portfolio yet – you are welcome to show the lecturer your existing artwork, so that you can learn what to include and find out which subject areas might be more suitable for you!

Located in central Norwich, East of England, Norwich University of the Arts was established in 1845 and is now one of UK’s seven specialist art universities. While traditionally known for Fine Art, the University is also running forward-looking digital media programmes on VFX, User Experience Design, as well as Games Design:
Employability is at the heart of teaching in Norwich University of the Arts, and it’s recognized by industry for providing exceptional training for work-ready graduates. Starting from Year 2 of an undergraduate degree, there are opportunities for work placement and for students to work on live briefs. They are also encouraged to submit their work to open competitions.
Norwich University of the Arts is a creative community of 2700 students led by a teaching staff who are themselves practicing artists and designers. The majority of its students are British and only 10% come from overseas. Notable alumni include Stuart Craig (Production Designer on Harry Potter film series), Brian Bolland (Graphic Novel Artist on Batman comics) and Keith Chapman (Creator of Bob the Builder).
In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, Norwich University of the Arts also provides foundation programmes in the form of a Year 0. Designed for students whose grades fall slightly short of the requirements of undergraduate year one, a Year 0 is an additional year attached to a standard 3-year undergraduate degree (students will be issued a visa that covers the whole 4-year period). Compared with a broad-learning art foundation, in the Year 0 students will focus on modules directly relevant to their art & design specialisms and be better prepared for their undergraduate degrees!
