All students are required to present an art portfolio when they apply for an art & design programme. What makes a good portfolio? What kinds of works should be included and what shouldn’t? How should you present your portfolio? Should you write an explanation or let the work speak for itself?

In the seminar, two Art & Design lecturers Stephanie Black and Wayne Lloyd from University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) will introduce all the basics of art portfolios, provide examples and share what expectation art schools have in their students.

• The Basics of Art Portfolio: The sketchbook, How many pieces of work should you include? What kind of work can you include?
• Specific portfolio requirement for different art disciplines: Showing examples of good portfolios for applying to Graphic Design, Illustration and Fine Art, to help you understand more about subject-specific portfolio requirements
• Examples of outstanding Art Portfolios from the past

After the Seminar, students with their portfolio are welcome to meet with the speakers for admission interviews and portfolio assessments. It doesn’t matter if students don’t have a complete portfolio yet – you are welcome to show the academics your existing artwork, so that you can learn what to include and find out which subject areas might be more suitable for you!

University Profile: University of the West of England (UWE Bristol)

Set in the creative city of Bristol, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) was formerly a polytechnic and was granted full university status in 1992. Employability remains at the heart of UWE Bristol’s education. The already tight relationships with employers continue to foster, which now include formal links with the BBC, Airbus, etc. UWE Bristol provides academic programmes in as many as 37 disciplines, among which Building & Surveying, Architecture, Town Planning, Allied Health and Art & Design are the strongest.
