Choosing the Right Course – How is Games Design and Games Development Different?

Games Design & Development is a subject that combines creativity, aesthetics and coding skills. Universities usually offer a range of slightly different programmes that cater to students of different skillsets and aspiration. Typically there are Games Design programmes that come with a stronger focus on design skills, while there are Games Development programmes that require high level of coding skills. Within Games Development, there is also a variety of programmes that require different level of coding skills.

In the seminar, a lecturer in Games Design & Development from Staffordshire University will explain the different focuses of these Games Design and Development programmes. What common modules do these programmes share? What sort of graduates will these programmes train? And how do these graduates fit into different roles in the Games Design industry? Is Games Design & Development actually more difficult than Computer Sciences?

Being a Gaming Geek is Just a Start – How is Esports Actually Events Management?

Is Esports a sport – or is it not? Studying Esports in university means that you’re essentially studying specialist Events Management programmes set particularly in the context of the Esports industry. Students will learn to run Esports events big and small, dealing with things like venue management, programming, software and hardware specification, as well as business-related elements such as marketing and promotion, strategic planning, online community management, etc. If you love gaming, you’re on the right track, but that’s also just a start!

In this section, the lecturer will introduce a few examples of Esport events, so that both students and parents understand the nature and the scale of these often phenomenal events. How has the Esports industry developed into such a niche that it’s necessary and viable for universities to train specialist talents? What exactly will students learn in Esports programmes? How much time do students usually spend on playing video and online games, so that they know enough about the “world” and the unique subculture of a game?

Graduate Prospect: Why do Businesses Like Airbus Need Games Design Graduates?

What makes a good game? Something so engaging to the point that it’s slightly addictive? That’s also what more and more businesses believe makes good products and services!

Under the raging trend of gamification, investment platforms, teaching & learning software and corporate training solutions are incorporating game and play elements in their products and services to improve user engagement and effectiveness. Games design graduates, therefore, have an expanding role in many industries! In the past, Games Design students from Staffordshire University have worked as interns in Airbus, to develop helicopter software as part of their testing and development processes.

In this section, the lecturers will show us some examples of jobs that their graduates were employed in. Instead of joining game developers, what sort of job opportunities are there for Games Design graduates?
