In the Seminar, Dr Elaine Hallam (Teaching Fellow, School of Optometry), Adora Wong (Hong Kong Student of BSc (Hons) Psychology – Year 3) and Jonathan Choi (International Student Recruitment Officer) from Aston University, Birmingham will provide an overview of the subject of Optometry and Psychology, as well as other health science subjects such as Audiology and Pharmacy, covering course structure, entry requirement, tuition fees, career prospect and professional qualifications:

How can one become an Optometrist in Hong Kong and the UK? How can you secure a pre-registration employment?

In order to return to Hong Kong to practise as an Optometrist, students would need to complete an Optometry programme recognized by the Optometrists Board of Hong Kong and obtain registered status as an Optometrist in the UK.

To become a registered Optometrist in the UK, students would need to complete a professional examination set by the College of Optometrists (UK) and a year of pre-registration work placement after graduation.

As that one year of pre-registration work placement is so crucial, some universities (such as Aston University) now offer 4-year Optometry programmes that cover the pre-registration work placement, to make sure that students can secure a placement and not have to worry about visa issues.

What attributes does the University look for in an Optometry applicant? How can students prepare for the interview?

As an allied health profession, the vast majority of Optometry programmes in the UK require an interview. Where should applicants pay extra attention when they prepare for their applications and interviews?

How can one become a Psychologist in Hong Kong and the UK?

Currently there is no statutory registration of psychologists in Hong Kong and the profession is therefore largely self-regulated by the Hong Kong Psychological Society. In the UK, the profession of psychology is regulated by law under the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), who maintains a register of qualified psychologists. If students were to obtain professional recognition in the UK, how long must they spend in their education? How do psychology graduates from Hong Kong pursue their professional qualifications in the UK?

What different job opportunities are there for Clinical Psychologists, Forensic Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Health Psychologists, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Psychologists, and Sport & Exercise Psychologists?
