Understanding Different Surveying Divisions

There are different divisions within the professional qualification framework in both Hong Kong and the UK, in which Building Surveying and Quantity Surveying are the two largest divisions. Other than that, Real Estate is another division has attracted more attention the past few years. What exactly do these different surveyors do? How would your choice of academic programmes and electives set you on course to a particular specialism? Is it possible, if you’d like to switch to another division, later in your study or after graduation?

BSc (Hons)

3 Year

Students who would like to eventually become a professional surveyor in Hong Kong must complete a Surveying qualification accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), to satisfy the academic requirements set by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) and the Surveyors Registration Board.

Professional Training

2 Years

Students can apply to HKIS as a Probationer right after graduation to proceed with their professional training. With a minimum of two years of professional training and passing the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), students can become a Member of HKIS (MHKIS) and practise as a professional surveyor.

The 7 Years of Training as an Architect: How to Become an Architect in Hong Kong and the UK?

In both Hong Kong and the UK, becoming a professional architect is a long journey that requires at least seven years. And normally more significant improvement in salary and remuneration only comes after obtaining professional recognition. Despite the difficulties, many students are committed enough to start their journey.

So when it comes to selecting architecture programmes, what advices would universities provide to prospective students? How important is drawing skills when it comes during the admission process? How could you prepare yourself, to finding a work placement easier? What do Architectural Technology and Interior Architecture programmes entail, as a potential alternative to Architecture?

BSc (Hons)

3 Years

Students who would like to eventually become a professional architect in Hong Kong are advised to complete an Architecture qualification recognized by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), to satisfy the academic requirements set by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA). The undergraduate qualification is commonly known as a Part I qualification.

Work experience under supervision of a registered architect (overseas or in Hong Kong)

MArch

2 Years

At postgraduate level (commonly known as Part II), students are advised to complete an Architecture qualification recognized by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA). Top universities normally require students to have at least a year of work experience!

Year-out

1 Year

Work experience under supervision of a registered architect (must be completed in Hong Kong)

Exam

8 Papers

Students who started their architectural studies on or after the 2022/23 academic year will be eligible to sit the professaional assessment of HKIA, after passing the Academic Qualifying Assessment (AQA).
