Architectural Language Crash Course: Basic Architectural concepts and terminology that help better express yourself

Architecture is a subject that blends the technical elements of Engineering and the aesthetic side of Design. While each has a language of its own, when it comes to admissions it’s the more abstract design language that often becomes an obstacle for students. What exactly is Gothic architecture, and what are Modernist and Art Deco? Why is Brutalism making a comeback and what’s so special about it? Which of the most iconic buildings of different architectural styles can be found in the UK? Through the eyes of an architect, the Lecturer will start by introducing some basic concepts and terminology in Architecture, to help students better express themselves in their portfolios.

Guidelines on Architectural Portfolio and Good Examples of Portfolios

Apart from visual design skills, Architecture students also need to command strong 3D spatial awareness and model-making skills. These are typically demonstrated through drawings, architectural sketches, model-making projects, photography and works in other mediums in a portfolio. Which of these are the most crucial skills that universities are looking for? How are requirments for undergraduate and postgraduate portfolios different? In this section, the lecturer will outline the basics of an architecture portfolio and share some good examples from the past, so that students and parents get a better idea on how to create an outstanding portfolio.

The 7 Years of Training as an Architect: How to Become an Architect in Hong Kong and the UK?

In both Hong Kong and the UK, becoming a professional architect is a long journey that requires at least seven years. And normally more significant improvement in salary and remuneration only comes after obtaining professional recognition. Despite the difficulties, many students are committed enough to start their journey!

BSc (Hons)

3 Years

Under the mutual recognition agreement established in 2024, students who would like to eventually become a professional architect in Hong Kong will be able to fulfill the academic requirements set by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) with Architecture qualifications accredited by Architects Registration Board (ARB). The undergraduate Architecture qualification is commonly known as a Part 1 qualification.

Work experience under supervision of a registered architect (overseas or in Hong Kong)

MArch

2 Years

At postgraduate level (commonly known as Part 2), students will complete a postgraduate Architecture qualification accredited by Architects Registration Board (ARB). Top universities normally require students to have at least a year of work experience!

Work experience under supervision of a registered architect (must be completed in Hong Kong)

Exam

8 Papers

Students with ARB-accredited qualifications will be eligible to sit the HKIA’s Professaional Assessment (PA), without going through an Academic Qualifying Assessment (AQA).
