Seminar Content

Dr Richard Thackray

Interim Faculty Director of Student Recruitment & Admissions and Lecturer in Steelmaking, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

In the Seminar, a lecturer from University of Sheffield will provide an overview of their Engineering programmes, covering areas such as course structure & content, professional qualifications, facilities, entry requirement and more!

Understanding Different Engineering Disciplines: Why do UK Students Usually Prefer the 4-Year MEng (Hons)?

Engineering is a highly specialized field that covers many finely defined professional disciplines. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers governs 21 of such disciplines, while in the UK there are over 30 professional engineering institutions who manage the accreditation of Engineering courses and professional training programmes. For students, these mean that getting it right with their degree choice will have a major impact on their career development. In the Seminar, the lecturer will provide an overview of these Engineering disciplines to help students find out about the best options for them! Apart from the most popular disciplines like Civil Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, what other disciplines are there? What about Computer Engineering, which has been increasingly popular? How would studying the broad-based General Engineering programmes affect your career development? When is it a Good Idea to Study the 4-Year MEng (Hons)?

How to Become a Chartered Engineer (CEng) in the UK and in Hong Kong?

As signatories of the “Washington Accord” – an international engineering education agreement – engineering qualifications in the UK and Hong Kong come with substantial equivalence, meaning that engineering degrees accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) are recognised by the UK, and vice versa. Therefore, students who have their postgraduate education (MEng) in the UK will be eligible to start HKIE’s “Scheme A” graduate training programmes, just as other Hong Kong graduates. After four years of graduate training programmes and reponsible work experience, as well as passing HKIE’s professional assessment, students will be able to qualify as a Hong Kong engineer (MHKIE).

MEng (Hons)

4 Years

As signatories of the “Washington Accord” – an international engineering education agreement – engineering degrees accredited by HKIE are recognised by the UK, and vice versa. Students who have their postgraduate education in the UK will be eligible to start HKIE’s “Scheme A” graduate training programmes, just as other Hong Kong graduates.

“Scheme A” Graduate Training

2-3 Years

Apart from Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, where the training period is three years long, all other disciplines require two years of graduate training.

Responsible Experience

1-2 Years

After the completion of the “Scheme A” graduate training, graduates of Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Engineering have to gain one year of work experience. All other disciplines will require two years of work experience at this stage.

Professional Assessment

Students will be able to qualify as a Hong Kong Engineer (MHKIE) after passing the Professional Assessment, involving a professional examination and an interview.
Qualify as Hong Kong Engineer (MHKIE)

In the UK, professional engineering institutions are licensed to award professional registration, under the framework set out by the Engineering Council. If students would like to train as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) in the UK, they will be able to do so after completing a master’s (MSc/MEng (Hons)). The training route itself is similar enough, where students are required to complete a period of post-qualification training (involving a graduate training programme and work experience). This period of post-qualification training usually takes 4-6 years to complete, although there is no set duration of the length of the training. The lecturer will provide more information about that in the seminar!
