UK Education Seminar: Social Media Ban & Mobile Phone-free Schools Policy in the UK

There is now a growing and increasingly universal consensus that excessive use of social media and smartphones is considered as harmful to mental health. Many families already set their own rules to limit children’s exposure, while governments worldwide are introducing restrictions. In the UK, the Social Media Ban is scheduled to take effect from Spring 2027, taking it one step further from the Mobile Phone‑free School policy which is passed as law in 2026.

In fact, even before these government measures, UK boarding schools have always had strict rules on smartphones and social media usage. Berkhamsted School, for example, introduced its Smartphone‑free School policy as early as 2023, helping students reclaim their day, reduce distractions, and turn their focus back on learning and interpersonal communication.

In this seminar, Chris Sutton (Head of Boarding & Director of International Admissions) at Berkhamsted School, will explain the proposed Social Media Ban in the UK, outline common smartphone and social media policies in UK boarding schools, and share insights into Berkhamsted’s pioneering approach.

The UK Social Media Ban: What are the rules for Under-16s? How would the transitional measures work for 16-17 year‑olds?

The Social Media Ban in the UK has been through public consultation in May 2026 with overwhelming support. The bill is now expected to be submitted to Parliament by the end of 2026, with implementation planned for Spring 2027. Under the proposed ban, Under‑16s will be prohibited from using social media platforms, while 16–17 year‑olds will face transitional measures designed to prevent excessive use and dependency.

In the first part of the talk, Chris will explain the rationale behind the Social Media Ban, its detailed arrangements, and how it aims to safeguard young people.

Smartphone‑free School: Is it contradictory to be “Pro Tech” while banning Smartphone uses? How is the policy implemented in boarding houses? Do Year 12-13 students enjoy more freedom?

Berkhamsted School is a pioneer in the UK, implementing a Smartphone-free School policy since 2023. Students in Berkhamsted now lock away their smartphones with Yondr pouches during the school day, alongside a range of advices and measures:

• Parents are formally advised not to provide smartphones to their children until the age of 14
• Smart devices (including smartphones, smart watches, and smart glasses) are not prohibited on campus
• All students must lock their phones in the Yondr pouches while on school grounds

Guided a “Pro Tech – Pro Boundaries” principle, while transitioning to a Smartphone-free School, Berkhamsted simultaneously strengthened its technology and AI education. These include providing senior school students with Microsoft Surface laptops, and many more. In this part, the speaker will explain how their smartphone-free policy works, and share the positive changes they’ve observed since its implementation.

According to the Policy Exchange thinktank, children at smartphone-free schools typically achieved GCSE results one to two grades higher! At Berkhamsted, public examination results have improved year after year since the introduction of the Smartphone-free policy in 2023.

School Profile: Berkhamsted School

Set in a Hertfordshire small town northwest of London, Berkhamsted School is an academic, large-scale independent boarding school very popular among local families. Catering to over 2,000 students across its prep and senior schools, it offers just around 100 boarding places, ensuring international students have ample opportunities to interact with local peers both inside and outside the classroom.

Berkhamsted implements the Diamond Model, where students in Year 7 to 11 are taught in single-sex classes, before transitioning to fully co-educational classes in Year 12 to 13, encouraging them to look past gender stereotypes and pursue their interests and strengths. Apart from that, Berkhamsted is also a pioneer in the UK for implementing a Smartphone-free School policy. There are strict digital device regulations on campus and it’s the School’s official advice to parents against providing students with smartphones before the age of 14, to minimize unnecessary distractions, and to turn their focus back on learning and genuine interpersonal communication.

Since the introduction of the Smartphone-free School policy in 2023, Berkhamsted’s public examination results have improved year after year! In the past two years (2025–2026), the overall A*-B grades in A-levels have consistently reached 83%, while the 9-7 rates in GCSE hit 76%. The classes of 2024 and 2025 saw a total of 34 students successfully progressing to medical schools, Oxbridge and other UK G5 universities, including five Veterinary Medicine and four Medicine students. Notable alumni include Clementine Churchill (the wife of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill) and architect Zaha Hadid – opened in 2025, the sixth form centre named after Hadid has been widely praised for inducing an even more productive academic culture!
