Chiropractic Seminar (University of South Wales)

Back pain and similar spine-related conditions are common among students, working adults and the elderly. Prolonged use of smartphones and computers and bad sitting posture may have worsened the conditions. When looking for treatments, many would have considered the chiropractors, who offer treatments without the uses of injection, surgery and prescription of medicine, instead put an emphasis of treatment through manual adjustment and manipulation of the spine.

In Hong Kong, chiropractor is a profession recognized and monitored by law. It holds a unique position in the heath care system which has different works and duties from doctors and physiotherapists. On an international level, World Health Organization (WHO) accepted the application of World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) in 1997 and published the “WHO Guidelines on Basic Training and Safety in Chiropractic” in 2005 in recognition of chiropractic as a common and effective treatment.

Registered chiropractors in Hong Kong must hold a qualification accepted by Hong Kong’s Chiropractors Council. Since local universities and institutions do not offer Chiropractic programmes, all practicing chiropractors have completed their degree overseas (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and others).

With Chiropractic qualifications obtained in the UK that are accredited by the European Council on Chiropractic Education (ECCE), graduates can directly register with the Chiropractors Council without taking any conversion examinations. Starting monthly salary for fresh graduates is around HK$30,000.

Details and Rundown of Event

The seminar will be held by Jenny Zhou, admissions representative of University of South Wales, and a Year 4 chiropractic student. After the seminar, they will also be happy to meet with students and parents to answer questions related to chiropractic studies and practices.

• Chiropractic Programmes in University of South Wales (Presented by Jenny Zhou, University Admissions Representative)
  In this session, Jenny Zhou will introduce University of South Wales and the Master in Chiropractic (MChiro) programmes, covering course structure, professional qualifications and registration, clinical training, entry & interview requirements and so on.
• Student Sharing (Presented by a Year 4 Chiropractic Student)
  In University of South Wales, Year 4 chiropractic students will spend up to 13 months working under professional supervision in the outpatient clinic at the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic. They will also spend a week on a hospital placement at Prince Charles Hospital, learning to engage with other health professionals. In addition to that, they will also act as tutors for students in lower years of the programmes! In this session, a Year 4 chiropractic student will share her experience in studying Chiropractic and her clinical placements.

University Profile: University of South Wales

University of South Wales is formed after the merger between University of Glamorgan and University of Wales, Newport in 2013. Currently the University has three campuses in South Wales. It’s one of the three UK universities that offer Chiropractic programmes that are recognized by European Council on Chiropractic Education (ECCE). As it’s also recognized by the Chiropractors Council of Hong Kong, graduates of the 4-year MChiro (Master of Chiropractic) will be able to register as a Chiropractor in Hong Kong right after graduation, without the need of additional qualifying exams.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is also one of University of South Wales’s strong areas! Students studying Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in University of South Wales will have the opportunities to participate in an aircraft maintenance placement programmes with British Airways. With the recognition from European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), students will graduate having completed part of the ‘EASA Part 66’ qualification, enhancing them to obtain full professional qualifications as an aircraft maintenance engineer after graduation.
