Dr Carlos Solar

Lecturer in Sociology, University of Essex

In the Seminar, Dr Carlos Solar, Lecturer in Sociology, and an admissions representative from University of Essex will explain the advantages of studying Social Science subjects:

Why study Sociology, Criminology, Politics & International Relations and other Social Science subjects?

Social Science covers a very broad range of subjects, but all of them often touch upon matters in the everyday. Studying these issues enables students to have a deeper and more informed understanding of our societies, our cultures and the lived experience of our own and our fellows’. In the Seminar, the lecturer will further explain why students should study Social Science!

FAQ: What’s Sociology? And what is the difference between Sociology and Social Sciences?

In terms of academic categorization, Sociology, Criminology, Politics & International Relations are usually put under the umbrella of Social Sciences, while some faculties of social sciences might also include Psychology, Economics, Media & Communication, Linguistics and more. What common teaching modules and theories do they share? As there are so many of them, at times students can find it difficult to distinguish between different Social Science subjects. the lecturer and the admissions representative will provide an overview of these social science subjects and highlight their academic focuses, in order to help students make a right choice!

What Practical Skills will Students Learn in Social Sciences?

Apart from theories, Social Sciences programmes teach a lot of practical skills from research methods, interview, literature review, quantitative analysis and many more, which are often much more practical than many think they are! University of Essex is also one of the 17 Q-Step Centres for Quantitative Social Science Education in the UK, in which students can learn extra quantitative research skills (such as running large-scale polls, the use of statistical software such as SPSS, AMOSS and more) through elective modules. Using their own programmes as examples, the lecturer will explain what these skills are and how they can be applied to different industries and therefore enhance student’s graduate prospect.

Graduate Prospect: What do Social Science students do after graduation?

Many things! Unlike professional degrees where there are well-defined career paths, social science students usually embark on unique career journeys, with some moving from one industry to another. the lecturer will share where their students usually go to work after graduation.
