Seminar Content
Professor James Scourse
Professor of Physical Geography
Why study Geography & Environmental Science? Why do students need to study Data Science too?
Increasingly Hongkongers have learned to appreciate the beauty and delicacy of the environment around us. As the impacts of climate change become increasingly tangible and countries come to a consensus to achieve Net Zero by 2050, knowledge of Geography and Environmental Science will become more essential – especially when different industries cope with more fundamental and regulatory changes to their operation.
In this seminar, a lecturer from Department of Geography of University of Exeter will provide an overview of the subject of Geography & Environmental Science. What skills will students acquire when they study Geography & Environmental Science? Many school students study Geography too, how is it different to study Geography & Environmental Science at university level?
FAQs: What is the difference between Geography and Environment Science? What actually do specialist programmes like Marine Science study?
In the UK, it’s very common for universities to offer both Environment Science and Geography. Many universities will also offer BA (Hons) Geography and BSc (Hons) Geography. In addition to these, sometimes there are specialist programmes that focus on a particular ecosystem, such as Marine Science! Where is difference lie between these programmes? And what common theories and teaching modules do they share? Which programmes come with a stronger emphasis on quantitative analysis? Could students cope if they don’t have a strong mathematics and science background?
Field Trips: What exotic places will field trips bring students to? Which part of the expenses are usually covered by students?
If you ask Geography students, field trips usually come as the most memorable experience of their study! These field trips are core learning activities in Geography and Environmental Science programmes. Students will have the opportunities to visit places of geographical signifiance (usually places of breathtaking beauty too!), putting theories to empirical experiments! In this section, the lecturer will share some examples of their field trips, which have in the past brought students to Isles of Sicily, Seville, Berlin and many more places! What activities and experiments would students do during these field trips? How long are these field trips usually? Which part of the expenses are usually covered by students?
Graduate Prospect: What do Geography & Environmental Science students do after graduation?
Many things! Unlike professional degrees where there are well-defined career paths, Geography and Environmental Science students usually embark on unique career journeys, with some moving from one industry to another. The Lecturer will share where their students usually go to work after graduation.
