Meet-the-Tutor Event: Advices on Selecting the Right A-Levels Subjects
Everyone knows that your A-levels subjects have long-term effects in your future. If done right, it helps students get to the university and programme that they aspire to. If not, it can also limit options.
So, do taking subjects such as Law, Psychology, Politics or Sociology in A-levels brings advantages to your university applications? What are the best subjects to take, if I want to become a medical doctor? Is Physics a must for an Architecture degree? Is that it, if I don’t have Chemistry in A-levels and I want to do Pharmacy in the future? Some A-levels subjects have more synergy between each other and foster a more holistic understanding of an academic discipline. Some combinations can keep options open, which is important when students are not 100% sure which way to go.
Details of the Event
This ‘Meet-the-Tutor’ event will commence in a small-group basis. A personal tutor from Sixth Form College Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) will advise students and parents on their subject combinations, mainly focusing on the following areas:
- The principles of selecting the right A-levels subjects.
- Based on your interest and academic background, provide advices on subject combination.
- Briefly introduce MPW’s personal tutor system and its benefits.
Before coming to the event, students and parents are recommended to have a thought about your academic interest and career aspiration and bring your academic reports of the past 1-2 years, so that Joel can provide more grounded advices.
Background of Your Personal Tutor
The Personal Tutor system in MPW means that every student will be paired up with a Personal Tutor, who will closely monitor student’s academic progress. Doing much more than answering questions about coursework, they will also co-ordinate your subject teachers so that timely support is in place when it’s required.
This ‘Meet-the-Tutor’ event will be attended by Joel, Personal Tutor & Director of Studies in MPW Cambridge. During his time as Personal Tutor & Director of Studies, he has come across lots of student cases and he will share his experience and success stories with you.
