【Seminar in Law】New Trends in Trainee Lawyer Recruitment: Is an Undergraduate Law Degree Still the Best Route into Law?

Students aiming to become a lawyer usually have a very direct plan: Get a Law degree from an undergraduate law school, pursue professional qualifications and become a lawyer. However, emerging new trends of recruitment in many transnational law firms now also welcome non-law degree graduates. In some of these law firms, trainee lawyers without an undergraduate law degree might even make up as much as half of their newly employed trainees.

These non-law graduates usually obtained their professional qualifications through studying postgraduate programmes such as Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Juris Doctor (JD) programmes.

In the Seminar, law professor from BPP University Law School will start with a discussion of this new trend in trainee lawyer recruitment and go on to explore the pros and cons of the two routes into the law profession – studying a law degree in undergraduate, or doing a GDL after a non-law degree?

What exactly do these law firms look for when recruiting new trainees? What skills and qualities are most valuable to them? What do they see in the education background of an applicant?
