Although boarding fees usually cover tuition, accommodation and most activities, there are still items come with extra cost. If there is any, these charges will be billed in the next school bill. Let’s explain them one by one below:

Guardianship (Applicable to Boarding Students Only)

Average annual guardianship fees are from £900 – £3,500. If students are staying at the guardian’s, it usually costs £50 to £60 per night. Guardianship expense is normally HK$25,000 to $50,000 per year.

Extra-curricular Activities

Facilities such as swimming pool and sport courts are usually available free-of-charge while activities like horse riding, instrument classes and school trips will come with extra cost. Each of these usually cost £200 to £400 per term.

EFL

International students may need extra tuition in English during the first term or academic year and most schools have well-run EFL (English as a Foreign Language) departments. EFL classes are normally run after school or during empty blocks, and are either taught in small groups or individually. Cost is about £200 to £2,000 per term, depending on the number of lessons required. In addition to EFL, most schools provide on-demand lessons in other subjects and cost per lesson ranges from £15 to £45.

Pocket Money

All meals are already included in boarding fees while outing cost, such as transportation and tickets, will usually be billed in the school bill and paid at the end of the term. Pocket money is usually for buying necessities such as shampoo and snacks. £20 to £30 per week will be fairly enough for most circumstances.

Uniform

Most of the boarding schools have school shops and you can always get the required items in there. They do sell second-handed uniforms sometimes and these are very reasonably priced. Cost of uniforms typically ranges from £500 to £1,000 depending on the condition of the clothes.

Others

Additional expenses may include airport pickup service, field trips, seminars and reference text books. (Boarding fees include text books, but senior students may sometimes need to purchase a few reference books).
