UKiset

UK Independent Schools’ Entry Test (UKiset)

The UKiset is an entrance test tailormade for independent schools in the UK, developed in partnership with Cambridge University Press & Assessment. First launched in 2013, today over 200 independent schools use UKiset results as part of their admissions process.

  • Student Age: 9.5 to 18
  • Skills Tested: Reasoning, Reading & Listening and Writing
  • Result Validity: UKiset reports are valid for one year
  • Retakes: Candidates may retake the assessment every 4 months

Do you need to take UKiset?

When applying to British boarding schools and independent day schools, some top schools may require students submit their application together with their UKiset results as part of the registration and pre-screening process. However, only a small number of schools will accept the UKiset results in place of their own entrance tests. Therefore, we normally recommend students and parents attend a consultation with our education consultant, and decide whether go for the UKiset after making your initial school selection.

Below are some of the independent schools within our school network that would consider UKiset results during the registration and pre-screening process:

What Skills are Tested in UKiset?

UKiset includes assessments of academic potential and English proficiency, which will be compared against British students within the same age group, to help admission team in boarding schools and independent schools understand students’ learning profile. Apart from academic ability and English proficiency, the test also identifies a student’s strengths, weaknesses and learning preferences, to provide a more all-round profile.

Section Duration Format & Content
Section 1: Reasoning 30-45 Minutes A computer-based test on Vocabulary, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematical Reasoning
Section 2: Reading & Listening 60-90 Minutes A computer-based test based on Cambridge English Test, which involves multiple-choice questions and gap-filling tasks, testing student’s receptive language skills
Section 3: Essay Writing 30 Minutes A written test with a pen and paper. Students will be given age-appropriate topics, to demonstrate on their language skills
Total Duration 2-3 Hours

Exam Results

It usually takes 1-3 working days to compile the results. Students and parents can select up to five schools when they register for the exam, who will receive your results automatically when it’s ready.

  • Standardised Scores: Available in each section of the test on verbal, non-verbal and mathematics reasoning. The score is standardised against thousands of British students of the same age, in the state and independent sector.
  • National Percentile Ranking (NPR): This shows where the candidate would be positioned if 100 randomly selected British students of the same age were assessed and ranked from the lowest score (1st percentile) to the highest (99th).
  • The Stanine 9 Ranking: This is a ranking system based on the NPR, where nine proportional bands (from 1 being the lowest and 9 the highest) rank performance against British candidates of the same age.
  • Two Average Scores: Average scores with and without the Verbal Reasoning result. This is to prevent that the student’s current English level negatively impacts their overall reasoning score, as most students speak English as their second language.
  • English CEFR Level: A rating based on the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which can be benchmarked with IELTS scores, which Hong Kong parents are usually more familiar with:
    CEFR Level IELTS Band Remarks
    A1 -
    A2 -
    B1 IELTS 4.0 – 5.0
B2 IELTS 5.5 – 6.5 Good enough for Undergraduate Degrees & Pathays already!
