UK education options for F.7 students (HKALE)
The old Hong Kong education system is similar to that of the UK. Students holding the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examinations (HKALE) qualification can apply for year-1 entry to UK universities. Requirements are normally three passes in HKALE and a good level of English. If the requirements of year-1 entry are not met, students can consider pathway courses such as International Diplomas, University Foundation Courses or Higher National Diplomas. All of these can lead to degrees at universities.
Undergraduate prorgammes in England, Northern Ireland and Wales last three years. Entry requirments of top 30 universities are set at a similar level as Hong Kong universities, but requirement could be lower in core subjects. Students will have a bigger chance to study their favourite subject and graduate a year earlier than classmates in Hong Kong!
Scotland is home to some of the oldest and most reputable universities in the world. Scottish undergraduate programmes last four years, and sometimes come with slightly lower entry requirements. Many Scottish universities allow advanced entry into Year 2, which means that course length will be the same as studying in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Upon satisfactory completion of this 1-year course students can progress to year 2 of a specific undergraduate degree in the associated university. Progression routes are mainly in Business, Engineering and in mid-ranking universities. If students would like to study other subjects in a better university, University Foundation could be a better option!
National Diploma and Higher National Diploma are vocational courses suitable for students who have little interest in traditional academic subjects. Focuses are on practical trainings of professional knowledge and skills for a specific profession, equipping students with industrial knowledge and practical skills that help them in work places.
