School of Architecture & Interior Design

UCA’s architecture and interior design degree courses teach the conceptual, design and technical skills needed to work in an architectural or interior practice or consultancy, or to go onto further study. The courses use state-of-the-art 3D software combined with a culture of multi-discipline study enabling students to develop their skills in spatial and structural design and practice. Students have access to industry-standard facilities including computer suites, modelmaking workshops, a digital technology suite and dedicated studios.

There are opportunities to work on live briefs and national and international competitions and to travel abroad. UCA has strong links with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

School of Communication Design

Graphic designers and illustrators provide high visual impact and design solutions to communicate across different media. UCA’s graphic design courses allow experimentation with both traditional and contemporary graphic production techniques.

School of Crafts & Design

The University for the Creative Art’s craft courses nurture the development of designers and makers through a range of vibrant studio and workshop design practices. School of Film and Media

UCA’s Film courses equip students with the creative and technical skills needed by filmmakers. Using enviable film production equipment, students learn specialist techniques such as directing, multi-camera shooting, production design, special effects, lighting, sound and image editing, and scriptwriting.

UCA has produced Oscar-winning Animation graduates. Students have the opportunity to bring a story to life and answer a brief using 2D and 3D software and industry standard facilities.

Journalism students at UCA experience real-life working environments and build up a strong portfolio to respond to the challenges of an exciting and demanding industry. UCA graduates go on to work in a great variety of roles in newspapers, television, web, PR and media companies.

Photography courses at UCA have a distinguished record and produce award-winning photographers. Students study photographic practice, theory and history in the broadest possible context. School of Fine Art

Students have the opportunity to experiment and engage with techniques and media before pursuing their own creative vision through independent work and collaboration with industry. On all these courses students can work across disciplines in areas such as painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, animation, film, video and installation. Students are encouraged to take an informed, creative approach to fine art in the broadest sense, situating their work clearly in contemporary practice.

High profile artists give regular talks and students have direct access to artists in tutorials. Students are industrious and pro-active with good self-promotion skills, taking on external commissions, setting up artists groups and exhibiting outside the course, as well as producing publications and making art in public spaces.

School of Further Education

UCA’s pre-degree courses offer students the opportunity to explore the wide range of art, design and media subject areas before choosing a specialism for their undergraduate course. They are introduced to the worlds of fashion, textiles, graphic design, fine art, three dimensional design, and media (including animation, photography & film). Pre-degree courses help students to discover their artistic strengths and develop their portfolio in their chosen subject area.

UCA has spacious art and design studios and access to a wide range of facilities including photographic darkrooms, editing suites, computing studios, print equipment and workshops. The teaching staff are all practising artists and designers and students have the opportunity to attend lectures and workshops by visiting professionals and practitioners.
International students have the opportunity to study the International Art & Design Foundation course, designed specifically for international students. This course can also provide students with a fast track and guaranteed progression route onto UCA undergraduate courses.
