世界排名 33（QS），英國排名 26，學術研究水平蜚聲國際，亦獲英國學術研究水平調查（RAE）評為全英十大。學術研究水平之高，吸引不少來自全球的頂尖學者加盟。曾獲諾貝爾獎的現職及前任教員及學生達 25 個之多，成就僅次於牛津及劍橋大學。在癌症研究、藥劑學、社會學及工程等範疇具領導地位，當中獲評為「領導全球（World Leading）」及「國際優秀（Internationally Excellent）」的癌症研究及藥劑學研究項目更達 90% 及 70% 之高，分別屬全英之冠及第二位。著名畢業生包括英國及全球政、商、醫學界、演藝界及學界等多個界別人士，包括香港匯豐銀行大廈建築師 Norman Foster 等。
