Studying in the UK since primary school, Johnson read Medicine in Bristol Medical School, after which he went through the Foundation Programme and has around three years of work experience in the NHS. Johnson subsequently passed the MCHK Licensing Examination and is currently working in Queen Mary Hospital and training as an Orthopedist.

Like every successful stories, Dr Johnson’s the education journey looks like smooth sailing now, but in reality there were many challenges and it involved a lot of hard work from Johnson himself, as well as support and assistance from teachers and parents to succeed. The Mentorship Programme therefore comes about to assist Hong Kong’s aspirsing medical school applicants. Hopefully Johnson’s own experience from study and work will make the process easier!

Eligibilty: Just 15 Places in the 1st Cohort

The Mentorship programme comes with 15 places in its first cohort, and is primarily targeted at students planning to start their Medicine programmes in UK medical schools in September 2024.

Applicants will be selected by Dr Johnson and education consultants from British United, based on their acdemic abilities, extracurricular activities and other learning experience, and other relevant criteria.

  • Target: Students planning to start their Medicine programmes in UK medical schools in September 2024 (ie. students progressing to F.6 in Hong Kong or Year 13 in the UK in September 2023)
  • Academic Requirements: Students must come with outstanding academic records and are taking Chemistry and Biology as their elective subjects in HKDSE, A-levels or IBDP (or other subject combinations that include two science subjects)
  • Application Documents: Students are required to submit school reports from F.4 (or Year 10), predicted grades, certificates and records of extracurricular activities, as well as a 200-word statement on “Why do I want to be a doctor?”
  • Cost: Free-of-charge

How to Apply:

Students are required to submit the official application form and other application documents by 7pm on Friday 23rd June. Simply register your interest via this post to start the process. Our education consultants will contact you individually with the official application form and other guidelines.

Programme Outline:

Each cohort of the Mentorship Programme lasts for roughly a year. It will cover initial preparation for medical school applications, preparation for medical school interviews and other issues related to studying Medicine in the UK.

Activities will be hosted by Dr Johnson and our education consultants and will primarily be conducted in a group setting, so that students can learn from and support each others. Successful applicants will be informed of the exact dates and time of these activities.

2023

JulyPreparation for Medical School Application (Parent participation welcome)

Students applying to UK medical schools are required to submit their UCAS applications by the early deadline on Monday 16th October. In the first phase of the Mentorship Programme, we will focus on the UCAS applications, as well as other preparation work:

  • Overview and Planning of UCAS and the Medical School Application Procedures
  • Suggestion on UCAS choices
  • Outlining your Personal Statement
  • Preparation for BMAT and UCAT

2023

November / DecemberPreparation for Medical School Interviews

UK medical schools usually conduct their admission interviews between December to Feburary. Before this process begins, activities in the Mentorship Programmes will focus on preparing students for these interviews:

  • Formats of Medical School Interviews: Panel Interview vs. Multi-Mini Interviews (MMI)
  • Typical questions in Medical School Interviews
  • What do interviewers expect from students?
  • Simple practices of interview questions

2024

AprilEvaluation, Reflection & Planning for the Future (Parent participation welcome)

After UK medical schools have released the results of their selection process, it’s time for some evaluation and reflection, to help prepare students for medical school and university life.

  • Evaluation & Reflection: What have students learnt from the process?
  • Explore other education options with students who failed to secure an offer for Medicine
  • Prepare successful applicants for medical schools – the more chanlleging parts of your journey perhaps only start after getting into medical school!
