Fees will usually include tuition and most recreational activities, accommodation and food. Some ‘Extras’ will be put on the bill for the next term, here are some additional expense items for parents to plan the budget for sending their child to UK boarding school:
Guardianship
Average annual Guardianship fees is from £650-£1000, on top students have to pay the host family around £26-£30 per night stay. Therefore an extra HKD $25,000-$30,000 per year is required for the use of guardianship.
EFL
Children from overseas may need extra tuition in English during the first term or academic year and most schools have well-run EFL (English as a Foreign Language) departments to cope with this. EFL classes normally run after school or during the free lessons either taught in groups or individually. The fees for EFL is about £200-£1000 per term, depending on the number of lessons required. But some boarding schools have already included EFL in their fees. If needed, most schools can provide extra lesson in other subjects, the cost per lesson ranging from £15-£30
Pocket Money
We suggest £20 at most per week. All meals are already included if your children full-board in the school. All outing fees (e.g. transportation fees/ entry fees) are usually put in the school bill and paid at the end of term. The pocket money is usually spent on buying necessities such as shampoo and snacks.
Extra Curricular Activities
Some activities are free, such as Swimming and ball games. But likely extras could be horse riding, learning music instruments, school trips etc. Most activities will cost between £50 -£200 per term
Uniform
All students purchase their new or second uniform from the school uniforms shop, the cost ranging from £300-£1500 depending on the condition of the uniform.
Others
Addition expenses may include Airport pickup, field trip, seminar, reference text books(Boarding fees include text books, but for the senior students they may require to purchase some reference text books).
