Located in Grenada, a commonwealth country in the Caribbean, St George’s University is home to a large medical school with over 6000 medical students. Its standard Medical Doctor (MD) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) are both five years in length. In addition to these, it also offers 6-year and 7-year versions that come with 1 to 2 years of foundation studies, which accept applications from F.5 graduates.
St George’s University has established a link with Northumbria University in the UK, which allows students to spend as many as three years of their 5-year programmes in Northumbria University. Recognized by medical authorities of many countries, graduates of the MD and DVM programmes will qualify to pursue professional qualifications after graduation.
Medical schools in the Caribbean are often considered second-chance options by students in the US and Canada. In St George’s University, therefore, 76% of students are US and Canadian citizens, and many of them will pursue professional qualifications in the US after graduation. Pass rates of graduates from St George’s University in the USMLE Step 1 exams are at 96% or above from 2012-2016, which are on par with performance of other US and Canadian medical schools. In St George’s many success stories, there is the case of Hong Kong graduate Kenneth Yeung, who graduated in 2002 and now practises the US.
