Monkton Combe School is an all-through boarding school located in rural area near the historical city of Bath. A member of the prestigious Rugby Group of boarding schools, Monkton Combe School was founded in 1868 to educate the children of clergy and overseas missionaries, and to this day has remained true to its founding aims, with a significant number of students coming from such a background. Academic standard is high – In the three years before the pandemic (2017-2019), A*-B rates in GCE A-levels were between 72% to 81%. Every year Monkton Combe School sees about 70 to 80 graduates leave school for universities – in a typical year, about 8% of them would make it to Oxbridge, while about 50% would continue their educaiton in Russell Group universities. In 2022, the most common desintations include Birmingham, Durham, King’s College London, Nottingham, Reading, UWE Bristol and York. Contemporary notable alumni include Chris Anderson (owner and curator of non-profit organization TED), Mike Cowlishaw (British computer scientist whose research has contirbuted to the standardisation of the .jpeg digital image format), Sir Richard Dearlove (Head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6), etc.
