King’s Ely School (formerly known as the King’s School, Ely) is a large-scale, “all-through” boarding school with over 1000 years of history. Notable alumni include Edward the Confessor (a former king of England) and Thomas Willett (the first mayor of New York). More contompary alumni include John Browne (former CEO of British Petroleum) and a number of experienced BBC journalists. Founded to educate choristers for the Ely Cathedral, King’s Ely School is based in historic buildings surrounding the cathedral and today runs both boys’ and girls’ choirs, with a very strong tradition on music education. Outdoor education is a key focus, with rowing as one of the most popular options and many student rowers competing in national competitions. In the past five years (2015-2019), A*-B rates in GCE A-levels were between 58% to 75%.
