Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation is formed after the merger of Durham School and the Chorister School, which share a long history of over 600 years and a strong link with Durham Cathedral.

With a strong tradition in sports and an outstanding reputation for its music education, Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation now provides boarding from Year 4. Notable alumni include Tony Blair (former British Prime Minister), Rowan Atkinson (actor of Mr Bean), as well as Peter Lee (former Commissioner for Narcotics of Hong Kong). The School offers a special A-levels scholarship, funded by a bequest from Peter Lee, which provides up to 100% funding to academically and musically elite pupils of Chinese ancestry to study A-levels in Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation. In the years before the pandemic (2015-2019), A*-B rates in GCE A-levels ranged from 61% to 69%, while A*-B rates were at 73% in 2022. Many graduates have continued their education in the north of England, with Newcastle University and Northumbria University the more popular options, while high-achievers made it to Durham University and University of Cambridge.
