Birmingham City University was first established as an art school back in 1843. Today the University is known for its strong provision in Art & Design, Performing Arts and Media & Communication. These include many specialist programmes such as Horology, Jewellery Design and Landscape Architecture. Programmes in Fashion Design and Visual Communication are also highly specialised, which is great for students with a strong passion in a specific area.
Birmingham City University’s world-renowned School of Jewellery is Europe’s largest school of jewellery, with over 125 years of history. After over a century of co-existence, the School has developed close ties with the thriving industry in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, with the Department of Gemmology officially relocating to facilities within Birmingham’s Assay Office in recent years! The Birmingham Jewellery Quarter is the largest jewellery trading hub in Europe, which accounts for 40% of UK’s output in jewellery and related products. Birmingham’s Assay Office is also the largest among the four assay offices in the UK. At undergraduate and postgraduate level, specialist programmes offered by the School of Jewellery include Gemmology & Jewellery Studies, International Jewellery Business, Jewellery Design, Horology and many more!
