An Admissions Talk on Applied Computer Science & Creative Technologies (University of the West of England, Bristol)
Main Theme
Nowadays there is little doubt that Computer Science offers wonderful career prospect, with new jobs and roles coming out every now and then. And there is also an increasing interest from students. However, many students would hesitate when it comes to making the leap into applying for Computer Science programmes. ‘Would it be too hard for me? Coding is quite abstrast and tough, isn’t it? And I’d need a strong maths and science background to excel? It’s probably not for everyone!’, and so the thinking goes!
If that’s the internal dialogue you’ve gone through, these applied Computer Science and Creative Technologies programmes we’re going to introduce might just be the right choice for you!
As computer technology expands its territories into virtually every industry, there are now a wide range of specialisms within the field of Computer Science, each catering to different needs of a particular sector. And many universities in turn have developed programmes that focus on these specialist areas! These applied Computer Science programmes could be easier to cope with for many students, as they come with a set context of application.

Dr Yasmine Rosunally
Senior Lecturer in Information Science Joining us in person!
In the Seminar, Dr Natanya Ford (Associate Head of Department – Creative Technologies) and Dr Yasmine Rosunally (Senior Lecturer in Information Science) from UWE Bristol will provide an overview of the latest development in the field of Computer Science and Creative Technologies and introduce the programmes in the University, covering course structure, entry requirement, tuition fees, career prospect and professional qualifications, in the hope to help students find the right subject area within the disciplines of Computer Science and Creative Technologies!
Is Computer Science Really that Difficult?
Is a traditional Computer Science programme really that tough? If it is, which part of it do students usually find most difficult? In this section, the lecturers will explain the difference between traditional Computer Science and applied Computer Science programmes. Which type of students would likely excel in a more general Computer Science programme, and which might be better doing an applied Computer Science programme?
There is More Than One Way to Code!
As computer technology expands its territories into virtually every industry, there also developed different kind of programming languages for different applications. These include visual programming languages, which can be much easier to understand for some students! In this section, the lecturers will introduce a few common programming langauges – many of them were created with very different ideas of applications – providing a deeper look into the world of coding. You might realize that everyone can code in one way or the other!
An Overview of Computer Science Specialisms
The lecturers will provide an overview of different Computer Science programmes, using some of their own programmes as examples, in order to help students find an area that’s most suitable for them!
