In the Seminar, Dr Alex Jeffries (Senior Teaching Fellow from Department of Biology & Biochemistry) will introduce the Biosciences programmes in University of Bath, covering areas such as course structure & content, facilities, entry requirement, placement opportunities, graduate prospects and more!

  • What’s Biosciences? What are the differences between Biology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences? In undergraduate level, many universities offer standalone degree programmes in Biology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. What common teaching modules and theories do they share? How different academic focuses will influence student’s careers and further studies?
  • How do Biosciences benefit everyday life? How are experiments and researches produced by biological scientists in their laboratories actually applicable to everyday life? Have you ever thought that many of what we now think to be common-sensical are actually informed by researches done by biological scientists? In this section, Dr Alex Jeffries will share a few ongoing research projects in University of Bath, to help students and parents understand the values and impacts of Biosciences!

    Against the backdrop of climate change, research teams in University of Bath are conducting research projects that can help us understand and manage future epidemics. How and why are researchers trying to understand the relationship between atmospheric CO2 and the speciation in mosquitoes? How can moths inform us about emerging bacterial pathogens in coastal area? In terms of therapeutic innovations, can glucose sensors developed in University of Bath replace the current finger-prick tests?

  • Careers in Biosciences: What career choices are there for graduates of Biosciences? Which industries do they usually work in?
  • Programme Introduction: At the end of the Seminar, Dr Alex Jeffries will briefly introduce the Biosciences programmes available in University of Bath – BSc (Hons) Biology, BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences – covering areas such as course structure, entry requirements, placement opportunities, exams and other modes of assessment, etc. In addition to standard 3-year undergraduate programmes, each of these degrees also offer a “sandwich” option that include a full year of placement.

In Social Science, the University of Bath runs a broad-learning BSc (Hons) Social Sciences alongside more traditional stand-alone degrees in Sociology, Criminology and Social Policy. BSc (Hons) Social Sciences allow students to mix and match over half of its teaching modules from a wide range of electives across different disciplines in social sciences. Students will therefore to be able to tailor a degree according to their academic interest, as they gain deeper knowledge in the discipline!
