Seminar: An Introduction to Robotics – Applications for Today and the Future (University of the West of England, Bristol)
Blending the knowledge and wisdom of Engineering and Computer Science, Robotics is a relatively new academic discipline with a lot of everyday and industrial applications – and increasingly so! As the prevailing trend of automation continues to take hold of the everyday and in industries, Robotics is rapidly gaining popularity as a study option in European and many other countries in the world.
In the Seminar, Dr Khemraj Emrith (Associate Head of Department of the Faculty of Engineering) from University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE Bristol) will provide an overview of Robotics as an academic discipline – What’s it? And what are the latest trends in research? Dr Emrith will also introduce a number of Robotics programmes in UWE Bristol, covering areas such as course structure & content, facilities, graduate prospect and more:
- What is Robotics?
- Why do students planning to study Engineering or Computer Science should get to know Robotics? How can the knowledge and wisdom from more conventional Engineering (especially Mechanical and Electronic Engineering) inform and be applied to Robotics? Why do students planning to do Engineering or Computer Science might even consider doing Robotics instead?
- Robot vs Machine: What are their differences?
- Artificial Intelligence: How does the advancement of Artificial Intelligence make robots smarter and more human-like? Must students be super passionate about computer technology, if they were to study Robotics? What level of coding skills does the University usually expect from Robotics students?
- Applications in Everyday Life: How will Robots change and improve everyday life in the next 10 to 20 years?
- Industrial Applications in Hong Kong: From Dr Emrith’s perspective, which industries in Hong Kong will hugely benefit from the development and application of Robotics? Dr Emrith will explore a number of opportunities in financial, medical, toy and the gaming industries!
- A Graduate Success Story – the story of Mekamon:
In this section, Dr Emrith will share the story of BSc (Hons) Robotics graduate Silas Adekunle! How did Silas create his gaming and educational robot Mekamon? In operation for the sixth year now, how did Silas’s start-up company Reach Robotics win the funding from The Prince’s Trust, HP and the University? What is in their latest release?
- The Bristol Robotics Lab: Situated at UWE Bristol’s Frenchay campus, the Bristol Robotics Lab is the largest academic centre for robotics research in the UK and is the result of partnership between UWE Bristol and University of Bristol. Just like the case of Mekamon, in their formative years many robotics and tech start-up projects require support in terms of strategic planning, technology, networking, etc. What kind of support do students get from the Bristol Robotics Lab? Apart from Mekamon, what other exciting projects are in the pipeline?
- Graduate Prospect: What job opportunities are available to Robotics graduates? Can they register as an engineer?
