Jessica Lucy Prytherch
Working on her personal brand “Nula London”, the UK-educated fashion designer Jessica Lucy Prytherch now divides her time between London, Hong Kong and Guangzhou China. She will be attending a sharing session at British United in June, sharing her experience in art schools and on building her own brand.
Having studied in a number of art schools in the UK, Jessica’s academic shares great similarity to the majority of local and international art students. After her secondary education, she took an art foundation course at the Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts (CSVPA) in Cambridge. She then went on to complete a BA degree in fashion design at University for Creative Arts (UCA) before attending a fashion and marketing course at Central St Martins College, University of the Arts London (UAL).
UK Art Schools: Breeding place of Practical and Solid Skills
Instead of focusing heavily on theories, UK art schools place enormous value on practical experience and encourage students to acquire industrial experience by attending work placements. Lots of students have accumulated much work experience before they graduated.
Let’s take Jessica as an example! During her time in school, she has worked as interns for brands like Camilla Staerk and Gharani Strok and Fashion TV. After graduation, she was employed by a number of international brands including NORDSTROM, Bloomingdales, Lograda, Wet Seal, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe as well as ALDO. Industrial experience is sound and solid for such a young talent.
Art Foundation:
Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts (CSVPA)
Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts (CSVPA) is the art college under Cambridge Education Group. Its art foundation course is the only privately-run programme officially recognized by the University of Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body. As the qualification is directly accredited by UAL, it is more recognized than other foundation courses and is especially tailored for students aiming at top art schools.
All CSVPA graduates successfully progressed to art schools and over 30% entered UAL. It is the best choice for many that aspire to study in number one art schools such as Central St Martins.
Undergraduate:
University for Creative Arts (UCA)
University for Creative Arts (UCA) is one of the two art universities in the UK. Campuses are located in five hugely secure cities. Focusing mainly on visual arts, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes cover diverse areas such as fashion design, animation, interior design, film and photography, etc. Uncommon options like fashion and arts management are also available for postgraduate studies. Notable alumni include Oscar-winning animator, fashion designer, film director such as Daniel Greaves, Michael Dudok De Wit, Karen Millen, etc.
Fashion design is one of UCA’s strongest areas. Epsom campus, where Jessica studied in, is the university’s major centre for fashion design, management and marketing. Resources at UCA Epsom include the Anglo-Japanese Textile Centre and the multi-million pound library and learning centre stocked with specialist materials.
Postgraduate:
Central St Martins College, University of the Arts London
Central St Martins College is one of the six art colleges under the name of University of Arts London (UAL). It’s the cradle of generations of world-renowned fashion designers and artists. Fashion designer Alexander McQueen and Paul Smith, film director Mike Leigh, singer Jarvis Cocker, and a number of Hong Kong emerging designers such as Wong Jing are all graduates of Central St Martins. Jessica studied for a master’s degree in fashion and marketing at Central St Martins College after her bachelor’s degree.
Nula London
Jessica Lucy Prytherch’s “Nula London” debuted in the UK last year at the Clothes Show Live with a pop-up shop and was voted best new brand by the event organizers. Specializing in luxury legwear, Modal and knitted fabrics, Nula London combines sophisticated elegance with vintage inspiration to create modern affordable luxury. Each garment uses the finest yarns as well as modern manufacturing techniques to enable a high-end finish and the softest touch.
Only a year after its debut, Nula London is currently stocked in 10 shops across China with the aim of expanding throughout Asia and Hong Kong over the next 12 months.

Sketching: Grab a pencil and get it all started! Jessica will demonstrate a few sketching techniques. Students are welcomed to bring their own stationary and sketch book for the class.
